about
Amit Rai Sharma
> a practicing sound-artist based in London, UK.
> involved in education and creative development.
> writing, recording, and releasing music with partners and as an individual.
The audio works make use of the mundane and background sounds of the ordinary, and transform them to create intricate and emotionally engaging soundscapes.
With a background in Applied Music Psychology (MSc), the work is deeply informed by the cognitive processes of how we interact with sound: 'how' we hear a sound and 'why' we interpret that sound in a specific way.
Amit's works are largely site-specific and carefully designed to be experienced as part of the larger whole. In this way, he encourages the audience to not pay attention to anything specific, but to fully engage in the space using their ears, eyes, and body.
Amit's works have been exhibited in public spaces, theatres, galleries and museums, and art fairs and festivals in UK and Europe.
Running in parallel to his sound art practice, for the last 10+ years, Amit has been working as a creative mentor with an experimental educational research charity, who work with young people who have disengaged from, or have restricted access to, mainstream education.
Together with his wife and artist Samantha Y. Huang, they co-run the arts initiative 'The Artist Support Centre' which works to interrogate the status quo in Fine Art in the hope of generating new and innovative ways for artists to have better, longer, more sustainable careers.
