Boxes of Belonging

2024

'Boxes of Belongings' is a multi-speaker, multi-focal, multi-lingual, sound installation. It brings together voices of migrants, the sonic backdrop of travel, and sound recordings of Changhua.

The installation features recorded interviews of people from different generations and cultures who have all moved country for one reason or another, with each box telling its own unique story; from a 92 year-old from China, stationed in Taiwan as a medical surgeon, to a London-born Polish who, inspired by watching the anime 'Akira' at the age of 11, made a decision to one day make it to Japan.

Boxes of Belonging was installed in 1/2 Room Gallery in Changhua, Taiwan as part of the 5th edition of 'Tsau Thuann Art Festival' 01-30 September 2024.

As someone who recently moved to Changhua from London, I have been thinking a lot about what home means to me. 'Boxes of Belonging' is my way of beginning to unpack what home means to me.

The work was featured across news outlets in Taiwan and on National Education Radio.
